Dear Parents and Guardians,
We had another great week in 7th grade! Students have eased back into the swing of things and are doing a wonderful job of managing themselves and their materials. As we finalize back-to-school paperwork and other housekeeping items, please let the office know if there is someone you know who needs to be added to our 7th grade parent email list. It may be that the email is incorrect in our PowerSchool system or is missing. We want to be sure that all parents are connected with the latest 7th grade news!
At the end of the month, students will be traveling to the UNH Browne Center for a team-building program led by Mrs. Dunn and the Browne Center staff. Information regarding this trip should have gone home this week. This is a trip for both students and parents, so please complete and return the paperwork as soon as possible so Mrs. Dunn is aware of who is attending. We look forward to a day of building positive relationships in our community!
In order to keep parents and guardians in the loop about 7th grade assignments and events, we have created a Google calendar. Please click here for the 7th Grade Team Google Calendar. You can also access this calendar on the front page of our team website (http://rjh7.weebly.com/). Students were provided with agenda books for tracking assignments, so they are also expected to record their assignments there as well.
If you ever have any feedback on how to streamline communication in order to better understand what is happening in the classroom, please feel free to reach out to the team!
Enjoy your weekend!
Sincerely,
The 7th Grade Team

- This week, students presented and assessed their summer reading group projects. Students then identified and presented evidence for at least two language arts standards that their projects addressed.
- Students also worked on completing their personalized learning plan.
- In order to further track their progress and showcase their work, students created online portfolios that will be updated throughout the year.
- To recognize the events of September 11th, students participated in a thoughtful discussion and activity that remembered the heroes of that day. Students were encouraged to continue these conversations at home.
- Currently, students are examining major themes in U.S. History, beginning with Westward Expansion and are presenting this information in a magazine-style portfolio that we are calling, “A Page out of History.” This will be added to throughout the year. We will be continuing this project next week as well.

- Next week, students will review the method to convert rational numbers to their terminating or repeating decimal form. We will set expectations for decimal representations of numbers to move forward through the year and upper-levels of mathematics.
- Students will also compare rational numbers using decimal approximations and absolute value.
- Our first unit test will assess these topics that we’ve covered so far, the foundations of higher order mathematics: absolute value, rational number types and conversions, graphing and comparing rational numbers.
- Please be advised that, since students are learning to demonstrate their reasoning, they must show their work in order to receive credit for an assignment. We are raising the bar from “I can do it,” the simplest level of mastery, to “I can explain it.” This is one step toward the highest level of mastery, “I can apply it as a tool in novel situations.”

- As mentioned at last night’s Open House, if you would like to see your child’s progress on Edmodo, you will need to create your own Parent Account and then have your child to log into their account and show you with their parent code found here. You can also send me messages on Edmodo that I will be able to receive any time.
- This week, we started our Weather and Climate unit by going through a set of interactive activities from Concord Consortium. Students will continue working on this activity, in class only, next week when they will dive deeper into how interactions within the atmosphere, oceans, and via biological activity change over time and the causes that occur during this process.
- Next week we will also be starting to build our first graphs, which will continue throughout the year, and constructing a graphing journal that will be accessible to view so that you can see how your child grows in their understanding of how to construct, modify, and interpret all types of different graphs/charts.
- We will also be cloning plants next week, at a culmination to our first quiz on “Parts of a Plant, and I’m asking students to bring in a small, thin plastic bottle to use as a pot. I’ve been doing this at the beginning of the school year since becoming a teacher at RJH and have had students now in college tell me how large their plant is after having them for 13 years.

- Students in Spanish are practicing daily conversational and literacy skills via speaking, listening, reading and writing in the Target Language. This week students created an art mural representing their take on the Spanish artist Salvador Dalí’s Los Elefantes. We will continue to review and build on concepts of describing ourselves: likes/dislikes and favorite activities. Students can check out up-to-date information on our Spanish Google Classroom!
- Students in French are taking on the expressions with Avoir next week. These are expressions that are widely used in communication and necessary to move up on the ladder of proficiency. We will continue to use Quizizz and Charlala to review concepts and grammar. Parents should have received an email with the course overview.

- This week, students worked in groups to find connections between characters and themes in their summer reading texts. In their groups, students selected a project, or created an original option, to demonstrate understanding.
- Next, students generated rubrics that will be used to assess their performance on the task.
- Also this week, students began looking at personalized learning plans and ELA/SS standards to identify their learning styles and track their mastery of grade-level concepts.
- Students completed the STAR Reading assessment to establish a baseline for their literacy growth.
- On Monday, students’ Character Connections projects are due.
- Next week, students will identify major themes in their units of study for U.S. History and track their understanding by creating an online portfolio.

- Next week, students will begin exploring the 7th grade standards related to Rational Numbers.
- Students will not be allowed to use their calculators for the duration of the first trimester except to check their work at the end of a problem. Many calculators get lost during this trimester. If you think it appropriate, please help your student keep track of his/her calculator (or store it in a safe place at home until it’s needed). They will be needed daily for trimesters 2 & 3.
- Please expect students to have homework assigned 2-4 nights per week, depending on where we are in the course of a unit. Homework assignments will be posted on my Google Classroom and noted on the Team Calendar on our 7th Grade Team website.
- Homework will be tracked and reported on PowerSchool using the following system:
Students are expected to revisit the errors on their homework assignments to make corrections. They can show me homework corrections during WIN or after school on Thursdays.

- Now that students have set up and have been using their Edmodo accounts, next week, we'll be diving deeper into the full functionality including how to use their planners as an on-line agenda, using the on-line backpack and folder tools, and turning in assignments.
- The first PlayPosit homework assignment will be assigned next week after a practice assignment. These on-line lectures will be the majority of student’s homework in the science Flipped Classroom. Grading guidelines and expectations will be explained and posted on Edmodo.
- Next week, we will continue our first journaling exercises of both videos and the lifecycle of Monarchs that is progressing in the classroom. With four of the six caterpillars now in the pupal stage (a crystalis) we are expecting our first butterflies to appear, hopefully, by the end of next week.

- 7th grade French students are off to an excellent start. They are learning to talk about their school schedules, and how to form opinions in French.
- They are enjoying using the digital platforms Charlala to record their voices and Quizizz to practice and test their knowledge.
